Boilers

 BOILERS

As one of the biggest costs for householders in the UK, it is worth understanding how energy efficient your boiler is, and how much you could save if you replaced it with a new high efficiency model.

Energy ratings explained

Boiler efficiency ratings used to be calculated using a system called Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK, or SEDBUK for short. Boilers were measured for how efficient they were at converting fuel (gas and oil) into heat. SEDBUK ratings ranged from A-G and had an efficiency percentage, with G being the least efficient.

In 2015 this was replaced by the Energy related Products directive (ErP), which provides an efficiency percentage but rates products from A++ to G, with G being the least efficient. Boilers have to have an energy label like this, which is similar to those found on other white goods.

Which boiler is right for me?

This is a question we get asked a lot and our answer is that it all depends on:

  • What fuel you are running the boiler on, Gas or Electric
  • What type of property is the boiler for
  • How many bathrooms are in the property
  • Where will the boiler be installed
  • How many bedrooms are in the property
  • Where does the flue come out
  • Although this may seem daunting, please be reassured that we can help with all those questions & advise you on which boiler is the right one for you and your needs.

COMBI

Combi, or combination, boilers heat water directly from the mains, when a hot tap is turned on, so you don’t need a hot water cylinder or water tanks in the loft, saving valuable space.

Combi boilers are best suited for homes with one bathroom.

HEAT

Heat only boilers are also known as ‘regular’, ‘traditional’, ‘open vent’ or ‘conventional’ boilers. If you have tanks in the loft and a hot water cylinder, then you may already have a heat only boiler.

They are perfect for like for like replacements in homes with more than one bathroom or a high demand for hot water.

SYSTEM

If you live in a home with more than one bathroom or you need lots of hot water then a system boiler is the perfect choice.

Hot water is stored in a hot water cylinder and can be delivered quickly to showers and baths.

CONDENSING

All types of boiler can be condensing boilers.

Since 2007 (except in exceptional circumstances) building regulations have stated that all new boilers installed in a domestic home should be

high-efficiency condensing boilers.

So the chances are you already have one if you've had a new boiler installed since 2007.

BIOMAS

A biomass boiler is a heating system that uses natural/non-fossil fuel resources to create heat for use throughout your home or premises.

This renewable heating system is available in a few variations, with capabilities and prices varying between each type.
